Talking with your kids about math:
Rule # 1: NEVER SAY, "Well, I'm not good at math" We don't announce to our kids that we can't read. Find a way to tell them that math is difficult to you but you are willing to persevere with them. Rule # 2: Incorporate math as much as possible. Have them estimate, calculate tax/tips/discounts, calculate how much change they will get back, or read a graph. Even simple addition & subtraction practice is good practice. Rule # 3: If you don't know the answer, help take the frustration out of it and help them find ways to figure out how to find the answer. Websites to help you
Remember How to do the math:
Khan Academy – www.khanacademy.org
This is a great website for students and parents if you forgot how to do something. There are videos and quizzes (for some) on most standards. This site is good for more than just math too!
BUZZ Math – www.buzzmath.com
PARENTS: This is one of my favorite websites for students to work on but costs $40 for a year subscription. It is helpful, interactive and topics for 6 – 8th grade math only. It is also available as an app. It might not show you how to do the math but it is a great site for them to practice math and when they get stuck, it will help them through it.
Math is Fun – www.mathisfun.com
This website is organized by big topics (Algebra, Geometry, Puzzles…). Within each topic you can then pick a more specific topic to study. For Parents & Students: Each lesson will walk you through a tutoring lesson – VIDEOS INCLUDED! For Students: At the bottom of each page you will find 10 questions for you to answer. It will grade it on the spot and then help you if you miss it.
Soft Schools – www.softschools.com
This website has some games, quizzes, and will also generate a worksheet for you to do. This can be helpful in more than just math class because this website has language arts, science, & social studies too.
AAAMath – www.aaamath.com
This is a full website of interactive math lessons. There is no cost and you get unlimited practice on each topic. The site is for K-8th and also has some parts in SPANISH. Each topic has a learn, practice, play, and explore section.
The topics were from before Common Core so sometimes you have to go to a different grade level to find the topic you need to practice but it does a great job with a lesson and practice section for each topic. In the PLAY section, there is count down (how many correct in 60 sec), Give me time (play longer for getting more right) or 20 questions (times you on how fast you can do 20 questions)
Math Drills – www.math-drills.com
If you have a printer at home this is a great website to practice/drill in certain skills. This website will create a worksheet for you to do on a certain topic and then also provide the answer key. The worksheets are different every time you visit the site.

THe common Core State Standards:
The Common Core Math Practice Standards are used throughout every grade level and are important to know about as a parent, student, or teacher.
|
"The Common Core concentrates on a clear set of math skills and concepts. Students will learn concepts in a more organized way both during the school year and across grades. The standards encourage students to solve real-world problems. (http://www.corestandards.org/Math)
